Azerbaijan actively promotes inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue

Washington DC; November 5th (News.Az): The event that lasted till 7 November became the first event organized by the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy headquartered in Berlin, reports.

Azerbaijani Ambassador’s speech focused on UN Security Council and international law.

The Ambassador pointed out that Azerbaijan is currently one of the 10 non-permanent members of the UN Security Council.

He also drew attention to the fact that Azerbaijan, with 22-year history of independence, was first among the South Caucasus and Central Asian countries to be elected to the UN Security Council is a landmark event for the country.

This success is related with the achievements of the country in terms of promoting peace and security, he added.

The ambassador also spoke about the structure and activities of the UN Security Council, and also raised the question of legal obligations emanating from the decisions of the international structure.

In the context of implementation of the UN resolutions, the diplomat touched upon the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. He said four UN Security Council resolutions on Nagorno-Karabakh have not been implemented for 20 years as Armenia declines to reckon with the requirements contained in these documents and the international community does not pay due attention to the situation, Suleymanov stated.

Suleymanov also emphasized the issue of humanitarian and cross-cultural interaction. The Ambassador stressed that Azerbaijan, located at the junction of continents and civilizations, actively promotes inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue. He cited the work of the Baku International Humanitarian Forum which was officially opened by President Ilham Aliyev as an example.

Suleymanov also pointed to the strong support of the process of intercultural dialogue by non-governmental organizations in Azerbaijan, in particular, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.
